Yes sir. You can run a 225/40R18 tire size and it'll fit nicely. Wheels will be nicely pushed out a little bit, but it'll make for a good, upgraded look. Not overly excessive or will run into issues.

This fitment is actually our recommended direct bolt-on fitment for the non-M E46.
In addition to the 225s mentioned above, you can also run a 235/40-18 tire as a direct fit as well.
You can even step up to a 245/35-18 but you may need to run a spacer in the front if you are running coilovers.

You can run 235/40's on the front and go a little wider in the rear like 245/40's with no problems. What wheels are you planning to get? I saw some nice options at 4wheelonline such as the Niche, American Racing, Foose and Helo.

What about stock 255/35 in the rear. You're implying once you go as low as ET35 you can't run 255/35 without rolling fenders?

I've been looking at hundreds of wheel brands last two months and they all have a hard-on for 18x8.5 ET35 and no other offset for BMW. I'm not going to pay Rays $3K for the privilege to ruin my paint.
