I recently replaced my valve cover gasket. New gasket kit and grommets are genuine BMW parts. The valve cover is not fully seated around the top right of the Vanos unit - see photos here Is this a normal condition or is this an issue with the valve cover - or something else? Engine is an M52TU.

Just changed the valve cover gasket and 15 grommets on my e46. Previously, it smoked some and smelled like burning oil at idle. I put everything back together and took it around the neighborhood. Well it smelled like burning oil and about 5 minutes in, the yellow oil light came on. I immediately...

I was replacing my VCG this past weekend and find the engine cover mount closest to the firewall on my valve cover has broken. My attempts to remove it resulted in the rubber part further coming off. I've attached pictures of the non-broken mount for reference, and the broken one. Any ideas on...

Hi there! Iv got a problem which has gotten alot worse over time where my 328ci mpg has gotten almost half, only on motorways do I find it barely hovering at around 29, which even then sucks because it usually sticks around 34. In the city iv been getting 16 mpg which is crazy! My low end...

-Got some things on a list of mine after I replace my front Rotors, Pads, and Bearings within a few weeks, and was wondering if there should be an order of operation. That is to say, I don't want to have any non functioning/ poorly functioning part mess up the the last job. E.G. If I replace my...

    Hi guys I have an '03 325ci (10/02) with part# 11 12 7 512 839, but I was wondering if I could use an identical looking one with the part# 11 12 7 512 840 instead?

Not bad at all! I was actually expecting sludge for a car that's almost a decade old, but I'm impressed what proper maintenance can do! I just wanted to give thanks for everyone out there that contributes to this forum, you guys make jobs like this a breeze and really make these cars as...

Hi, I've got a potato chip of a vcg on my 2001 e46 and I'm leaking and smoking all over. It has the m54b22 168hp "sleeper" 6 cylinder. That's all fine and dandy except I just discovered that it's a horrifically rare engine to find parts for. Does anyone know if the vcg on the b22 is the same as...

A couple weeks ago I replaced the VCG, spark plugs, and rebuilt the Vanos unit. Since then it seems the moderate oil loss my car was suffering has increased. I have a hunch this could be caused by the CCV, but before I start ordering parts and taking on random jobs I thought I'd ask for...

Hey guys, so I'm a newbie here and pretty new to working on cars in general. Yesterday I replaced my VCG and spark plugs on my 2002 330ci after reading up and watching diy's. When I fired up the car for the first time after the install the engine idles very roughly and the rpm bounces, and a few...

New to the forum also fresh hands on bmw's. I've been lurking around a while and tried doing a search on this, but didn't find much. This weekend I am doing vcg, spark plugs, vanos gasket as well as oil change. So my question is. Should I do the oil change before or after the other items listed...

I cracked my existing valve cover while replacing gasket about 750 miles ago and I'm now replacing it due to minor leakage. Should I install a new VCG or can I re-use the existing one that has only a few miles on it? Thanks. Sent from BimmerApp mobile app

After week holiday and not driving, last night when i turned my car on to go to the shops i could smell something wrong under the hood. Opened up and this is what I found. Is this a VCG issue or something else. Whats bothering me is that the oil is leaking underneath the screws not around the...

I was goofing around on youtube today and saw a video of an M20 running without a valve cover and I thought " I gotta try this". Haha, WELL I ended up making a huge mess! I knew theyre was gonna be SOME oil slinging but not that much!     It was kinda cool to...

I changed my valve cover gasket two days ago - today CEL came on. I thought based prior reading its probably O2 sensor/spark plug boot/connector or vacuum related error due to VCG not sealing or not enough torque. Then I came home planning on redoing the VCG job but ran a code scan on the...

Hey guys, Need some input here. Ive recently replaced all common oil leak components(OFHG,CCV,VCG) and still manage to have an oil leak. I am losing about a 1/2 quart a week or so. I took apart my bottom splash shield and saw dripping on the driver side of the shield. I am not sure if it's...

Hey everyone.... I have chased an oil leak that i thought was coming from different areas but managed to clear out some space and really see that it was coming from where the timing tensioner bolt is located. There is no leak coming from the crush seal on the tensioner bolt, and the VCG is...
