I just replaced the head unit with the BMW specialized EONON unit. Search in the electronics forum for it.
Getting to connect anything to the OEM radio is a very expensive pain in the ass, but quite a few purists are putting a tuxedo on the pig of a 20 year old sound system. Enjoy.

If you are intent on keeping it original, I have a roav fm transmitter/charger that is surprisingly static free.
Anker Roav Bluetooth Car Adapter and Car Charger, Power IQ 3.0 Type C PD, Bluetooth FM Transmitter for Car, Wireless Calling with Bluetooth 5.0, Noise Cancellation -T2
Not bad for a $25 solution.

You will probably need to replace the speakers that are rotted by now as well.

      Re: the EONON-
      My 18yo daughter loves it.
The back up camera is a must have because when the top is up, there are scary blind spots. It lets you install android apps so she will sit and watch Netflix in her 2001 330ci convertible like it is a drive in.
It comes with the connectors for the stock wiring to the head unit and amplifier which costs a lot on its own, so it's an amazing value.
She doesn't complain about it. For a dad, that is a huge win.
