Just noticed your E46 is 2000. If it has the round 20-pin connector under the hood, then you must get an adapter and use that.

The 20 pin connector cap must be in place (and have the pin jumper in the cap) for the under dash ODB port to work.
You may be able to get a 20 pin to 16 pin "adapter" like this to work-
