Which way does shifter bend

When installing a shifter, is the "elbow" pointing forward towards the engine or backward?

I put the E60 545i Short Throw Shifter into my 330ci with the 6-speed transmission. When in 2/4/6th gear, the lever is basically resting on the back edge of the shifter boot opening. I installed with the elbow pointing forward (lever tilting back).

I can switch it (total pain), but I don't want to do it wrong.

Here is how I have it oriented:

Have you looked up the part on realOEM.com, it should show you the orientation.

Does the attached picture help at all? I know it's not for exact same shifter, but still for an e46. It is the shifter I'm going to install in my e46 M this winter.

There is the arrow on lower right side of pic as if to denote the orientation.

Thanks! I can't believe I didn't look there.

So I did it correctly and it just bends a lot towards the console
