DIY: S54 Chain Tensioning piston Install on M54

Finally decided to change my M54 camshaft chain tensioner with one from the S54. The benefit from this is a stronger push to the chain guide, making the rotation of the chain smoother (less slack?). For sure, once installed, I noticed the engine running just a tad less noisy.

The S54 tensioner is pricey; $250, however I managed to get a deal from ebay for only $50. A new crush washer is mandatory which I purchased from dealer $1.

TIS Instructions:
Tensioner.pdf

Tools:
1/2" ratchet
32mm socket
10mm socket (for the windshield reservoir)

Lots of rags, some oil will spill once the old tensioner is almost removed.

The new (used) S54 tensioner:

Old one still on engine:


Closer with the windshield reservoir removed


Cleaned and ready for install with new crush washer


I tried a lot of extensions, angles, etc, but this is the only thing needed to get the old one out/new one in

After some time, it broke loose and removed. Set them side to side: (Left: S54 / Right: M54)








Getting ready for install:


The tensioner is spring loaded, so you need to tighten it while pushing it in.
Used one hand to push and the other to twist

No problems at all, just read a bunch of topics regarding this "upgrade" basically. Found a cheap part (was not going to spend $250 for this) and did it. For added benefits, I will post again after I put some miles on it. Right now I just started the car to check for leaks etc.

Different construction entirely. The pistons are different as well, the springs inside are different as well. For sure the spring tension is around 50% more than the M54 version.

I have put around 1200-1300 miles after the mod and an oil change (was due anyway). Still feels quieter and smoother throughout the rpm range
