Whenever I think of that car I recall memories of old women driving them in the late 90's. Not the best image for a car to have.

If I had one I'd mod it up to make it look presentable.

An SLK32 could be fun for cheap. The core components are built well. It's all the peripheral crap that gives you headaches.

My Ride: 2002 BMW 330CI Vert
We looked at a couple of these for my wife two summers ago. She wanted a vert, I preferred a hardtop, was hard to find a hardtop in the $10-12k range other than the SLK. It was a decently fun car to drive, the little 4 banger supercharged version sucked, but the 320 was fun, didn't get to try the 32AMG. We ultimately decided against it because she was going to commute in the car and the interior was just too small. No room at all behind the rear seats and the trunk is a joke. Also I was rather uncomfortable in the driver seat. I am not a giant, 6'0" and 190lbs, but I felt very cramped. In order to get my legs to fit decently the seat had to be almost straight up and down which was not comfortable.

It would be an okay car to bomb around in for an hour or so, but really not good for much else. Basically a 4 wheel motorcycle as far as practicality. We ended up with the 330ci vert instead and are very happy we went that way even without the hardtop.

My Ride: 2011 Subaru WRX
My mom's has a 99 SLK230 Sport, and she's had it since 2001. The supercharger went out at about 35K miles (but unfortunately out of the warranty period, so it was a $3500 repair bill). They had some sort of issue with the retractable roof a few years ago (I can't remember the specifics, but it's a pretty well documented problem), and that cost like $1000 or so to fix. The car is actually pretty fun, but it's super tiny, a HUGE gas guzzler, and not that reliable..
