Sunshade

Great DIY

I tried to fix it today. Removing glass was easy, as was replacing clips and installing shade back. My problem is that shade "driver" is bent up somewhat and just slides over the rear clip. I don't know how to bend it down. M

Thanks 'lincomatic' for the great write up and all the pics. Really made my job easy this weekend, when I replaced the clips. However I have a question regarding the glass adjustment.

After installing the glass and everything, the sunroof and the shade open up nicely without any hitch, but when I try to close the sun-roof it travels forward about 80% , stops and then retracts to about 50% and stops.

I strongly suspect that this problem is related to the glass adjustment. I think that the rear end of the glass is too high. Can you please provide any quick fix to this ??

Thanks !!

Bump...

Mine does this too, basically started doing it on its own - tried the "reset" procedure (holding in the button) and it didn't fix it. Can anyone help us out?

I have the same problem as you guys after fixing my sunroof as well. I would try to reset the motor first and then clean the tracks and lubricate. I haven't tried any of these yet but I will try to reset my motor after work today and see if it helps any.

Check out this thread here - https://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthr...hlight=sunroof

and this one - https://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthr...hlight=sunroof

- I was told by the dealer that whenever this happens, all you have to is "reset" the moonroof by pushing and holding for at least 10 secs, the button towards the CLOSE position.

I guess that clears the sunroof "memory."

- Mine has been working for over a year since the dealer first diagnosed the problem as a bad sunroof motor and wanted $350 parts and labor for the R&R. It still does that same funky behavior every month or so, but all I do is reinitialize the motor using the technique described by interalejo. You don't hold the button forward (towards the front of the car), or backward, but instead push and hold it straight up. Mine takes 20 sec. to initialize, and when it does, you can hear a quick 'buzz-buzz'. Problem solved - kinda.

I tried to re-initialize too, Does that buzz-buzz , but the problem still remains. Next I am gonna try to allign the glass again + re-initialize. And my last resort would be to WD40 the tracks. Would post my results soon !!

I too tried to reinitialize the motor but it didn't make a difference. I will wait to see if adjusting the glass helps sandy44 before adjusting mine.

The reset didn't work for me either - I'll try again though.

It seems like a safety thing, like it gets to a point then senses an obstruction so it backs up. Maybe it's some type of positioning switch in the motor that is malfunctioning.

Oh, one other thing - the shade is fairly stiff to slide across (especially when compared to my wife's 328). I wonder if this is simply a lubrication issue, and the motor is reversing as a safety measure because it thinks there is something in its way...

Worked on this problem today. The motor reverses at the instant it tries to slide the shade forward - this originally seemed like an "intermittent" problem, but in reality it was because the shade was already forward a bit on those times when it worked.

Short story is I removed the glass and lubed everything up - used Fluid Film on all moving parts, including the shade "catch" bracket on the driver's side. Now everything slides nice and smooth, and no bounce-back problem with the sunshade.

Help!!!

I tired to fix the sunroof & I had a problem which no people had ever mentioned. I couldn't move the sunshade driver all the way forward as there's a long piece of metal inside the sunshade driver track (circled in green). Anybody know what's that. Thanks in advance for any input.

Does this happen in the newer e46's or did they more or less fix that problem, this whole write up kinda is scaring me as to what to find down the line?

I did this a couple weeks ago and it was an easy DIY. However, my driver was completely broken off ans laying behind the rail area.

I removed and the sunroof shade still pushes back from the sunroof itself. It slide really smooth now.

Well after nearly two years of my shade being busted it kind fell on me this weekend so I think it's time to fix it.

One of the metal clips, that looks like it's part of the cover itself, bent and broke off.

My question is can this be replaced or do I have to buy an entirely new shade?

Here's a picture of what I'm talking except one of the metal prongs on my cover is busted.

My sunshade driver was bent, luckily the repir kit came with a new one, how do you install that piece?

Do I need to remove the headliner?

This is what it's supposed to look like but mine is bent upwards and out of the track

The new piece supplied with the repair kit is much wider and sturdier. I'll take pics later

I belive so, the only way to remove it is by unscrewing the clips from the top and you can't access them if the glas is between you and the cover.

Luckily removing the glass is the easy part
