There is a rattle under the front end from somewhere not sure qhat or where very metal loose rattle like a plate or something. Can't help with the rattle. You'll need to get under the car and have a good look.

Burning smell is usually a valve cover gasket leak dripping down onto the exhaust manifold. Look for black marks on the manifold.

The oil level sensor is unreliable/poor design. Replace it at your next oil service.

One typical rattle is an exhaust hanger that cantalevers out from the transmission. Tends to rust off and leave one end rattling on the exhaust. Would be rpm dependent then though. Cost me only like $6 to fix lol.

Rattle could be the exhaust manifold heat shield. They're famous for rattling around when they get loose over the years. PITA.

I highly advise you start learning to work on this car yourself.

No problem with revs. Is the manifold cover easy to get to? Car is pretty low so limited access underneath with no jack

Not exactly sure what you mean by manifold cover.

If you're talking about the Valve Cover Gasket which is likely leaking oil onto your exhaust and causing the burning smell it is a pretty simple fix and you don't need to lift the car, you can do it with the hood popped. Watch this video below (and check out his other videos, great DIY channel for the E46).

When you have the car at the shop ask your guys if it looks like oil is leaked onto the exhaust manifold or the passenger engine mount. If so, do the valve cover Gasket (and possibly the engine mounts if the oil damaged it). The gasket is an easy DIY, the engine mounts require a jack and more specific tools.

Is the light red or yellow?

If your oil isn't low and the light is yellow, replace the sensor for $6 next time you change your oil.

If it's red you may have bigger problems but I would still start by checking that you have enough oil and replacing the sensor.

is this 2000 a USA model or other? you sure itís a 2000 330i and not a 323/328?

guessing no Pre Purchase Inspection (PPI) done listing items needed to get repaired was done/supplied?

the rattle sound can be a lot of things, but the heat shield for exhaust manifold could be the source.

agreed burning smell is likely oil leaking from valve cover gasket.

agreed oil light at startup is typical of failed oil level sensor. needs to have oil drained prior to install, so do next oil change. I would only buy Hella brand oil level sensor. others dont last as long.

if in USA Iíd start using FCP Euro for my parts source. they offer good pricing but more important Lifetime Warranty on every part they sell.

old E46s that been neglected will need lots of repairs. if youíre paying someone else to do work itíll cost $$$ quickly. even somewhat maintained E46s can become costly. thereís a lot of DIY articles here and on YouTube you may consider getting into.

welcome to the forum

The 50s Kid is who you should be watching on Youtube. He taught me the basics of being a mechanic through his videos. He will show you about everything without cutting it out. You'll sit through a 30 minutes video each time but he's a knowledgeable dude. Heck, I'm starting Auto Technician training in a month and a half because of watching his videos.

Thanks for the help guys. I got under the car and the rear heat sheild was rattling around. Thats been tightened but still i have a rattle. I spoke to my garage and my control arm is lose. Ive bought 2 and there getting replaced along with bushes on Tuesday. I suspect after watching videos from the 50s kid and a fee others that my vanos seal needs replacing wich maybe where the oil leak is coming from. Having a bit of trouble identifying wich seal pack i need. Any ideas. Is it just the o rings seal i need or is it something else?
Thanks

Your Vanos Seals are likely shot, yes, but they aren't causing an oil leak. It's a good idea to rebuild your vanos with new seals and maybe even the rattle kit from Beisan Systems (http://www.beisansystems.com/index.html) while you are doing the Valve Cover Gasket but the VCG is what would be leaking, not the Vanos.

EDIT: I'm slightly changing my answer. The Vanos oil supply line could be leaking but that is unrelated to the seals and can be replaced without removing the valve cover. If you do the VCG and Vanos seals, consider replacing the Vanos oil supply line at the same time. I still suggest focusing on VCG, the rest is extra.

I can certainly point you to some kits if it'll help, FCP Euro is the recommended part supplier around here (but not the only option) because they carry quality parts and a lifetime guarantee.

Step 1: Go to this site http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/select and enter the last 7 digits of your VIN in the field for 'Serial Number', hit search, and post a link to that page here so that we can see exactly what you are driving.

Step 2: Decide EXACTLY what you are trying to fix. Are you doing the VCG? Want to tackle the VANOS seals too? Are you chasing down all possible oil leaks? Once you finish step 1 I can link a kit to take care of the VCG and Vanos Seals + Oil line to start.

Are you planning on installing these parts yourself? If so, watch both videos from the50skid for VCG and Vanos seals to make sure you're comfortable with the work BEFORE buying any parts.

USA 330i production started in 09/1999.

So yes, there was definitely 2000 model year 330i.

i would not go by that drop down window. i bought my 323Ci in 2000 and never seen a 330i being on the showroom. pretty sure they didn't get them until mid-year 2000 in europe. a bit later in the USA. even C&D's first article was in Dec 2000 for the release of the 330s. and can't confirm but pretty sure even those late build 2000s were classified as 2001s. BMW is weird like that.
