I am afraid that's the M56 SULEV (super ultra low emission vehicles) ... same as M54 aside from the different valve cover, a special and more expensive radiator, and a completely sealed fuel system and gas tank. One benefit is that the aluminum valve cover has an integrated oil separator (pcv) system , which is actually better than on the regular m54 engine. However, the main negative is that the sealed fuel tank does not allow just fuel pump to be replaced when it fails. It can become a big liability to fix at that point.

What year is the car? The fuel system does have a 15 year or 150,000 mile warranty but that would still be in effect for only the newest of e46s at this point.

The s54 engine is on the M cars, btw ...

The valve cover is from the M56 SULEV, for sure. But I would look up the car on realoem. Many folks have retrofitted M56 valve covers onto regular M54 engines.

Enter the last 7 VIN digits into the Serial Number textbox and hit the Search button.

the S54 is what the E46 M3 uses. maybe you mis-typed the S for M in the M54 which is what the 325 usually comes with. unless as already spotted, it’s the other Super Ultra Low Emission vehicle “M56 SULEV” engine. which really is not desirable used and out of the extended warranty because of unique super ultra high cost replacement parts.
but no that’s not an M3 3.2L S54 engine.

OP should definitely confirm using realoem.com & the last 7 Vin digits, but I also do not see the Schrader valve at the front of the fuel rail that the m54 engines/cars have to test fuel pressure .... I hope you are right and I am wrong though ...

Mmm arguable. At least M56 cars don't have nearly the concern about RACP issues that earlier cars do, and you'll never have to worry about your CCV system if you live in the snowy north.

Still wouldn't touch one with a 10-foot pole though, what with how common "better" E46s are.

Good point! The fuel rail and intake manifold are definitely from the M56 SULEV now that I looked closer.

It's an M56. It has the M56 intake manifold with posts for the cover.

Sounds like the OP got taken, at least he can get a few bucks for the valve cover, harness and dipstick tube when the fuel pump dies.

You seriously have to ask? You don't notice that you're 151hp short?
In that case I have an E46 with an S65 for sale right now.

It's not like a buyer had a choice on transmissions.

why not? he wasn’t looking for an M56 SULEV so he had a choice.

also I think the above poster was just listing the reasons that he thinks makes it the worst E46.
