Also the hours are hit or miss, he might climb a few hundred foot tower and be done for the day. Then work 12hrs a day for 3 days. Overall he loves it, going around the country seeing stuff. He had 2 bi-planes fly by one day, then turn around and come back to wave at him. And he only climbs relatively "short" cell towers, not the ones like in that video.

I looked into this kind of work a while back, until I realized that the salaries are dismal. The only job requirements are a high school diploma, clean driving record, and large testes.
I assume you had the diploma and the clean driving record. You must have failed on that 3rd criteria.

surprised they don't do this to get down, it'd be quicker than climbing down.

Can you imagine how much that tower wobbles at the top...especially with both guys on it. I know it has monster cables supporting it, so that's probably why base jumping wouldn't be such a good way to get down.

Also, have to say, his clipping on, really wasn't much of a clip. I'd have hooked around the tower, not just rested the hook on a rung.

The towers dont sway a much as you would think. My tallest climb is 410' but even with the cables, the towers are designed to live in equilibrium. What he is clipping on is fine, you don't ever belt the tower, just the nearest thing as the entire structure is designed for this.

I knew a turd of a guy that claimed he used to do this with cell phone towers, changing antennas and whatnot.
Told us stories of huge wasps and stuff sometimes, and how the power to the lights and antennas would buzz and hum, and all kinds of crazy crap.

I looked into it, but couldnt find any solid leads, looks like most start at $15/hr like one dude said.
Wouldve loved to do it then, but not anymore. Sounds like a great way to scare yourself daily and feel so alive.

Antenna jumps happen almost every day, the BASE community is just very tight lipped about where and when. It is what the "A" in BASE stands for.

The problem with just handing a BASE rig to a tech, is that it takes many years and hundreds of jumps to get to the point where you won't kill yourself in spite of having a good canopy. Like dmax suggested, guy-wires kill.

Any teenager can climb.
It's what you do when you get to the top that separates the men from the boys.

I had a buddy who climbed towers. On one climb, his fall protection equipment "failed," so he fell 200-something feet before hitting the ground. His widow now has to take care of the three kids they had together. I haven't been able to find the investigation results, so I'm not sure exactly what they found.

It can pay well, but it's not worth the risk in my opinion.

You want to do plenty of research ahead of time as well. I'm sure there are towers out there with enough EM radiation coming off of them to cook you in a heartbeat.

Any "bathroom function" is beyond me. Eating? Depends on the climb. If it's going to be a long one, they may carry their boxes up with them and just take a break at some point, tie off with a couple of big hooks (positioning device system), open their lunch boxes, and go at it.

I'd be tempted to fire off a few knuckle children at the top of one of those towers. talk about a "broadcast."
