That's OK, the common cold is like Democratic Socialism, the Coronavirus is like full blown Communism.

Flu kills a lot each year, and it would kill even more if it weren't for the availability of a vaccine. Flu prevention and treatment are well known yet it still manages to kill in large quantities.

Now take COVID-19, which has no vaccine and we have no full understanding of how it's transmitted and has a higher rate of death than flu. That's why people are so concerned.

(1) True.

(2) True. Apathy, ignorance, and anti-vaxxers have a lot to to with this.

(3) True as of this writing.

(4) Not true. We know exactly how it's transmitted (it's a virus like any other virus). What we don't precisely know is who has been exposed to it, susceptibility in the general population to this particular virus, and an exact incubation period (the general consensus is fourteen days, out of an abundance of caution, but the incubation period might be... fifteen days or more[uh oh]? Ten days [sigh of relief!]? And latency in the body? That's an unknown experts are still investigating).

(5) See (3)...

Wash your hands often, stay away from crowds, don't have avoidable human contact (shake hands, kiss, get lucky), follow all the flu-avoidance strategies, and you'll be just fine... It's a virus, not the goddamn Andromeda Strain...

Considering the flu kills about 16k people each year in the US and the Corona virus is about 20 times more deadly, IF it were to spread like the flu, we're looking at 320k deaths. But that is a big if.

Remember H1N1, more commonly known as Swine Flu? This was the most recent pandemic (besides HIV/AIDS, which is still considered a pandemic). It began in early 2009 and lasted through late 2010. Between April 2009 and April 2010, there were approximately 60.8 million cases, 274,304 hospitalizations, and 12,469 deaths in the United States alone! Globally, it likely infected between 700 million and 1.4 billion people, resulting in 150,000 to 575,000 fatalities. While this loss of life was tragic, more than a decade later, many scarcely remember Swine Flu. The same will hopefully happen with COVID-19.

From Realclearscience, some additional perspective.

And I will continue to avoid contact with humans in nyc tomorrow

Contagion is a lot "scarier" than Outbreak, much more realistic in regards to **** hitting the fan.

I hope that crap comes here and thins out the old people a bit. Sick and tired of old peckerwoods driving too slow because they're old, blind, deaf, and possibly dumb. Or possible all of those things combined. Come on COVID-19, Ottawa traffic needs you!!!

Google is stupid, the masks do nothing, sure wear one if you are sick so you don't spread germs coughing, but if you are trying to prevent getting sick the masks are useless.

data on this? Don't just say death toll per infected population. There's a lot that goes into getting a deadliness quotient (I just made that up) and it's far more than a simple math game (paging rayfooley).

Deaths from the flu are largely concentrated on people at high risk of respiratory failure (elderly and babies) more so than the average population.

you should do this every day, not just tomorrow and definitely not just through this "issue".

Also, I've never seen such an AoG estimate like this one...somewhere between 150k and 575k people died. Accurate number, just an uncertainty of 400k deaths...

This. Went to HD yesterday and their face mask/respirator section was sold out. Bunch of idiots. If you want a mask that'll protect you, it'll cost a hell of a lot more than $5.
