High mileage car, is it better to get oil change every 5,000 miles? Does it matter?

Hello Everyone, I have a 2003 BMW 330CI that has 190,000 miles. Because it is high mileage, is it better to get oil changes every 5,000 miles still? Could I hold off until 6,000 miles? Does it even matter? Thanks for any advice

You should be fine. Depending on the level of driving, the BMW OCI for synthetic oil is 15,000 miles but most of us adhere to 7500 miles. You should be fine at 6000 miles.

With a good quality oil - 7500 miles is fine.

For routine oil changes, I run 5K intervals on all of my vehicles.

6K, 8K, 10K, etc. intervals are fine as well, so long as you:

1. Use a quality oil + filter.
2. Change the oil once a year, regardless of mileage.

I believe BMW scaled back to a 10K OCI not too long ago, which seems to be the industry standard nowadays for almost all vehicles.

I do an Oil Service on our xi about every 6-7k with Castrol Syntec 5W-40 and install fresh plugs/filters while in there. It keeps the car dead reliable for my better half. The stop & go she commutes in, is pretty hard on the car. So, I like to change out fluids(trans, diffs, transfer case, brake system, etc..). This seems to keep the car way more reliable with less component failure(vastly increased service life) into the long term.
regards

I'm one of those weirdos who actually likes oil changes, so my OCI has always been 3-5K.

http://www.spannerhead.com/2013/05/2...he-oil-change/

The incongruousness of a car enthusiast simultaneously bragging about their fastidious maintenance routine AND the fact that they can go 15K between oil changes has always baffled me.

Take a read of this. https://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forum...Number=1900212

I would not change your oil more frequently. If anything:
1. Change the oil filter - synthetic oil does not break down any faster in an older engine, but older engines (especially with poor maintenance), can have more contaminants. That is the job of the filter.
2. Switch to a detergent oil like T6 (I know this is controversial)
3. Use something like BG EPR to give the engine a scrubbing.

Using frequent oil changes to clean the engine is environmentally bad, as well.

in my experience you could easily be doing 10k-15k oil changes using the proper synthetic oil our engines use. I’d just suggest to change the filter twice in those intervals.

5k would be for extreme engine conditions or people who often don’t really understand quality synthetic oil compared to their past cars old dino oil needs.

if you do 5K changes now, 6K won’t blow your engine or cause issue.
E46 owners here are flipping 200k on their engines doing 15K changes. just do a search for their stories.

on this forum oil is a wacky topic with everyone having an opinion.

But BMW is pretty clear on their E46 recommendation service interval. 6K is plenty early before that.

I'm at 215k miles. 330ci convertible manual. Owned 9 years. And do oil changes every other year. That's about 25k miles. And it's always clean under the valve cover. Also losing 1 litre every 700 miles or so. So in my head I'm thinking the oil is already getting changed anyway since it's pising off somewhere and I top it every 2 weeks or so.

My service info when turning on car is also saying to do a service after 30k plus miles or something last time I checked. That's alot.

There is no way I will change it every 5k miles. Not even 10k. If you have no other issues why wouldn't the oil be ok for 10k miles?

How many miles do you drive a year and the climate? I average about 5K a year in a mild climate and do an annual oil change. After ten years, I haven't had an issue. If you're curious, send a sample in for analysis.

well considering I drive just over 180 miles a day, I change mine at a longer interval. I have to add a quart between oilchanges, and I change it about every 3 months. I use Mann filters and Mobile 1 euro spec oil.

99 323i with 330,000 miles on it.

10k intervals for me. It's a nice round number that's easy to remember and more than enough UOA's on BITOG to tell me M1 0w-40 will go that distance.

I've been doing 15K oci's for years now. Always LL-01...and my engine seems fine but it only has 384,000 miles on it. I feel horrible about treating my car this way, but it seems to be okay with my abuse.

190k, driven 25k/yr. I did an oil change when I got the car and did a 12k run on Motul 8100 5W-40 and Mann filter and then spent the $12 on an analysis from Blackstone Labs (if you're asking this question then you should do this too. If you think you're doing your car a favor by doing much shorter OCIs then you should do this too), and was told that the oil easily had longer runs in it, so I do the factory 15k OCI.

Somebody is seriously changing plugs every 6k? I didn't even do that back in the day with my '60's muscle cars.

Have you done an analysis to confirm this?

The 3k thing from back in the day was pushed on us by marketing from the oil change places. There wasn't any reason to do them that frequently even with dino oil.

Oil is cheap and easy to replace, so I dunno why you would be changing it per what the car says.

Not trying to turn this into anything and you do whatever you want, I'm just saying that unless you do an analysis there's little scientific basis to your method.
