Buy this one.

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2001-bmw-740il-25/

Same color and wheel setup my dad has. Only difference is the previous owner dropped his about an inch on some H&R springs, really looks nice, even for a 21 year old car.

I posted the above E38 in the classifieds.. it looks like a great car! Short of paint correction/protection & mechanical checkup, that is one classy DD.

Valley pan will leak coolant, I changed it myself, replaced some other coolant hoses and knock sensors when I was in there. Not a huge job but requires removal of the intake system.

Lost one window regulator in all that time.

Just replaced the cruise control module for $65.

MAF sensor quit a couple years ago, the car would randomly shut down while driving. Replaced that and it was good to go.

The biggest, and most expensive, issue has been the catalytic converters. They both went out and to replace them from BMW was going to run near $3,000. Which is a tough pill to swallow on a car that old. A local indy BMW shop found cats that would work for $1,500 and replaced them.

Other than that the damn thing has been bulletproof. No major engine work, absolutely zero transmission work. The interior looks just as good as the day he bought it, the seats hardly show any wear. It still drives smooth as glass. He is leaving tomorrow for a 2k mile road trip in it and has zero worries.

So if you want one, beware of the cats, and valley pan leak, and don't worry too much about the rest. My E46 was far worse than the 740 has ever been maintenance wise.

Now this white car, that is the pinnacle, I will definitely be following that auction.
Kind of you to add input & draw this comparison.. most tend to think that big vehicle : big maintenance costs. I guess this boat gets a bad rap from it's water-bound counterparts..

Does a $35,000 reserve sound reasonable to you?

This one is awesome, that's the same color my E46 was in and it's beautiful in the sun.

I need to sell my S2000 before I can buy anything else though, wife will kill me if I do otherwise.

S2k's on where aplenty?

I may try and put mine on BaT this summer, we'll see. There aren't too many out there with low miles and good condition.

Unfortunately the 7 series after the E38 was such a turd that they tend to get a bad rep these days. My local indy BMW shop won't even touch the newer ones and tell their customers to stick to the old 7's or buy something else.

I have no idea on value on the white car, the stock E38s haven't held value very well, but this thing is far from that.

Sam, this is a sign for you, another one popped up today, so now there's two on there under $4000 and the mint white one has yet to show it's face!

**UPDATE**

Just got news from M5Board that the Supercharged S62 E38 will be LIVE on BAT today!

Time to see where this thing goes... owner said he had an idea as to the price it will go for, but obvs doesn't want to say anything yet. We will find out after the auction is over next week if he was right with his guess.

As much as I love that car, I'm not sure I'd want someone else's project car...
