Engine Removal via Subframe Drop?

Is it possible to drop everything down and slide it out the front without a engine hoist?

(I may still need to rent a hoist anyway to get the engine up on the engine stand)

How would you take it out the front without a hoist in that case?

Don't.

I haven't pulled my engine, but I have pulled everything else.

Get a hoist. Rent or buy. I have a HF folding unit that's annoying in the garage until I need it. Every time I use it I'm glad to have it.

You can certainly just drop the subframe with the engine attached. I suggest pulling the intake first - there's alot of wiring and plumbing under there.

Became a good customer of HF again. Used hoist to get replacement engine on stand for freshening (seals, CCV, etc). Bit of re-learning curve but got 'er done.

I know this thread is rather old, but yes, it is possible to remove the engine without a hoist. You will first need to completely remove the front end, and with three floor jacks, you can support the subframe and carefully lower down the subframe and engine/trans by lowering each floor jack evenly. I would also recommend three furniture dolly's (~10 bucks each at harbor freight) to lower the subframe/powertrain down onto, so you can roll the assembly out the front once it is lowered.

However, with the cost of the floorjacks, you may be better off just buying an engine hoist and suspending the engine from above, and then removing the subframe bolts.
