Headlights keep turning off (xenon, e46 323i, 2000)

My headlights keep turning off... Either by themselves after 30 seconds to 3 minutes or especially when I go over bumps then one of them or both of them flashes and then sometimes goes out. Like some sort of connection issue... But if I turn the lights off and then ON again they both light up again but then goes out as before when it shakes a little or after 30 sec to 3 minutes. Is it ballasts? If so, do I need to take headlights apart to check which type to buy? Or could it maybe be some other kind of connection issue?
Any help? ***x1f64f;

I had the same problem until the passenger side headlight went out and never came back on. My mechanic thought it was a lot of expensive things. I said thank you and took it home. I finally removed the headlight; no simple task and found the wiring leading to the ballast connect had cracked insulation and two wires were broken all together. Working on the the repair now. This isn't my DD, so I have time to think it through before spending a grand on a new headlight housing. Adaptive, xenon headlights are nice, but very expensive to replace!
