Recommend me a hedgehog resistor! :D

Final stage resistor has packed up in my old E46 touring.... again! Seems the ones I've had of ebay previously are made of chocolate, lasting 12-18months at a time. Can anybody recommend a good quality replacement which should last properly?

Edited to add: I'm in UK, so UK or euro suppliers please

It would be helpful if you mention which brand and version were the previous ones, and where did you get them from.
OE, OEM, or aftermarket?

$47 gets you the OE part reboxed, made in Germany.

Not sure of relevance tbh - and as they were ebay from 2018 and beyond I've no idea I'm just looking for recommendation of a quality new item, irrespective of what's gone before.

That's great! But I'm in UK so doesn't work for me... I'll see if I can find a UK supplier with the same code

When it's failed does the fan change speed without the speed changing on the display? I've read countless posts where people say fluctuating fan speeds meen the FSR is failing. I always leave my climate on auto but it does seem like I hear the fan speed fluctuate at times where I do not see the speed indicator on the display change so I'm assuming that means FSR.

I have had that before - this time it was on max to clear the screen and just....died.

You would be wise to check the female pins!

Impossible to make them tight, partial new harness worked for me!

The question is relevant two ways -
Fist, we'd know what FSRs to avoid.
Second, if you were buying the latest version OE or OEM FSR, and still getting them fail within months of installation, the issue may not have been the resistor at all.

Sitronic or Behr. Also the Behr units now are different from those on the assembly line IIRC. Now they are "Behr-Hella aftermarket" and made in China. Not that it matters, the new Behr unit in my car has been working fine for years.

I just bought a Behr through a local Federated. I was quite dissappointed to see it was made in China. This may or may not be an issue. It needed a tiny bit of grinding to get it in.

The <30USD Behr found on Amazon are of course also Chinese, but no way of knowing if they are genuine. So many reviews say they didn't last long.

AB Electronik is indeed a genuine mfr. Unknown if they are the one for the final stage resistor.

As many have pointed out, quite a number of these are made in China. If you're having issues, I'd suggest a O.E.M. one.

One thing we've come across in the past where a final stage fails prematurely; The blower motor can draw an excessive amount of current through the FSR, leading to it's premature demise.
Usually caused by either a worn blower motor drawing excessive current, or a bad ground path. Be it the grounds themself and/or a bad K4 heater blower relay.
And/or both.

Just a heads up.
Hopefully a quality FSR fixes your issue.

Friend recommended a unit from GSF, a well known quality supplier. I also had a discount code meaning delivered for just over 30 which is good if it's a quality item. Time will tell I suppose! BMW wanted almost 120, which seems crazy for such a simple item

Lasted me a year, and I bought from rockauto.

Valeo is the OE supplier, and the Valeo unit is made in Germany also sold as Sitronic and Rein to my knowledge. The 'Rein' unit is less than $50 if you're in the US, and is IMO worth the extra $20.

(OP, good luck with the GSF)
