Steptronic won't shift into 5th

Hi All, I recently dropped my driveline into another vehicle and the car does not want to shift into 5th by itself. If I put it in Manual mode it is fine. Also if I put my foot down hard in sports mode it will stay in 3rd. Previously you would just back the throttle off and it would shift by itself. The only thing that has changed is the that it lost a little bit of fluid out of the cooler when tje engine was swapped.

I am due to do a tranny oil change this weekend, but do you think a little fluid loss would have caused this?

The first step in diagnosing any problem is to scan the engine computer (DME) and the steptronic computer (Bozo (/s)) for codes.

I wouldn't drive it without checking fluid level first, it's possible that there isn't enough to engage highest gear. Also, you said you swapped your drivetrain. Was it swapped to the same model? Did you have to swap ECU and TCM? Or are they the same? Tell us more of what you did.

Steptronic won't shift into 5th

Just for another data point here's my similar symptoms:

My AT has been not shifting into 5th for about 6 months (176k miles now).

Exactly one year ago (164k miles) I replaced guibo, CSB, trans filter, drained and refilled trans fluid.

Sometimes, but not always, it won't shift into 5th if I'm in sport mode. Regular drive or manual mode work fine.

I have noticed that if I'm hard on the throttle then it will stay in 4th gear even if the revs go above 4K rpm. I have even managed to get it to stay in 3rd once.

When I get a chance I'll check the fluid level and report back.

I dropped the motor and tranny out of a 325 into a 330 shell. The loom, computers, dme, ews everything was transplanted. The only thing that be different is the diff ratio. Both cars were auto and had the steptronics

Now that I think about it there was no fluid loss as the trans coller was attached the whole time, the fluid loss im thinking of was from the power steering quick connects that are attached to the condenser

Did a scan tonight and no codes in relation to the tranny. The other thing that comes to mind is that this new car may have a different diff ratio. I cant see the sticker to see what ratio it is though. I will clear the adaptation values and take it for a drive in the morning see what happens

So I reset the adaptations, and took it so a drive today and back to normal, sort of... It goes into 5th now, but not until your doing 110-115 kph. So I am assuming the diff ratio is definitely different

At what RPMs does the transmission shift to 5th gear? I would also pay attention to RPMs at other gear changes.

Around 3k. Took it for another big drive over the weekend and its definitely back to normal. Im certainly not a fan of economy mode though, it will be sport or manual for me.

I just seen your post , I have the same problem a month ago. In drive mode which is normal mode ,it drives ok. Then if I floor the car in sports mode it will stay at 3rd gear and just holds all the way to recline and not changing to fourth . If I drive normally it will go thru all the gears until it gets to fourth and just hang around . If it's at 4th gear and I floor it to lockdown it will hang in 3rd gear and stay for minutes until it decide to change ,sometimes for 30 min and never change up.

Maybe a suggestion for the OP? Since the differential remains off of a 330, the computer and everything thinks it's a 325. If you're handy with winkfp perhaps you can try and flash the transmission software to a 330 version. Maybe that will make it drive more natural.

I did discover that the diff ratio is a 3.38, the old one was a 3.46. As stated before it shifts fine now. I did read somewhere where they did a diff swap the same thing happened, reset adaptations and back to normal
