Another Airbag Recall?

I just posted this over on ZHPMafia, but thought I'd share it here also:

Here we go again.....Just got an email for another recall regarding airbags. This time it's the inflator... how does Takata stay in business?

Summary:

PASSENGER'S FRONT AIR BAG: This recall is for vehicles which have already had the Takata PSPI passenger front air bag replaced as part of a previous recall. During air bag deployment in an accident, the passenger's front air bag module may produce excessive internal pressure that could cause the inflator to explode.

the email:

To:you Details
U.S. Department of Transportation National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

Your vehicle MAY be involved in a safety recall and MAY create a safety risk for you or your passengers. If left unrepaired, a potential safety defect could lead to injury or even death. Safety defects must be repaired by a dealer at no cost to you.

Why am I getting this email?
You are receiving this message because you requested to be notified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) if there is a safety recall that may affect your vehicle.

Wonderful.

BTW Takata went bankrupt a couple of years ago b/c of the initial recall. Other companies are mopping up their mess.

I haven't received a letter but both of my Cabriolet's indicate an open recall for this.

Same here, my 2002 325i looks like it's affected. No letter yet, but confirmed on BMW's website. Do I need to wait until I receive a letter to have the work done?

Just got the email...Called dealer, said call back monday, service department is closed...Recall the recall, what a shitshow. My dealer is pretty far away from me so this is a huge time waster. More downtime with the car when its been down for the past week!

Anyone have their pass. Airbag replaced yet? Called BMW manhattan, probably the largest dealer near me and they said they didn't have any ETA on parts avail.

now it's getting confusing with the recall on the recall. dealer here at first said there was no open recall. they are rechecking. **how can i make sure they don't reinstall the same passenger airbag from the first recall? will there be a new part number?

recall on the recall?

You should be able to enter your VIN w/ BMW or NHTSA to confirm (if in US at least). I'm going to try calling a different dealer today to see if anyone has an idea of when they'll be in stock.

I've also heard some people are getting buyback deals (if purchasing another BMW).

good idea to try some other dealers .. i don't want them to reinstall the same 2015 version of the passenger side airbag.

** response from second dealer: yeah there is a recall in our system for a previous interim replacement. but you'll need to bring in the car before we can determine if a newer part is needed.

I just tried the NHTSA and BMW sites; both report no recalls needed for my car. Will stay with this to see if it changes. After I had the passenger airbag replaced, I started getting the airbag (red) light when a passenger occupied the seat. Not sure if it's related to the airbag replacement or just coincidence.

I just had this recall performed at BMW of Riverside. It took only an hour. Attached the relevant details from the invoice so folks can see the part numbers of items that were replaced.

They gave me a 2019 330i for a loaner. I made sure to "test drive" it appropriately.

Thanks for posting that. Remind me again what model/year you have?

Interesting to see if we have this second recall set valid also in Finland.
I will ask later today from BMW.

Update:
No active recalls for my E46 316i 1.8i sedan 2005 or E46 330CI 2004

Jeez good thing I removed my airbags. I still get recall letters for e46s I don't even have anymore. Any of you guys get the gigantic one that unfolds into a giant life size airbag?

Very helpful.

I presume if I had it done in Dec '18 it would have addressed the problem with a new airbag plus attaching elements.
