You're not really risking that much.....just pull. If the boot breaks, it can be removed with a clothes hangar. Did the job on an E90 and had 4/6 of the boots break. Yeah it was annoying but...

5DF5 is 100% a module failure. Very prevalent issue on 2002 Model Year E46s.

Also there will be Steering Angle Sensor codes as well when the module fails, that happened to me too.
