Once you read the EWS, the data should automatically fill into the key once you write to the key. Don't worry about the used/ununsed slots

You can do it, but it isn't simply just unplugging the EWS. You also need to reprogram the DME and jump the EWS wires so it sends power to the starter

Any codes? And the key chiming in ignition isn't a test for the EWS - that is just a comfort feature that can be disabled with coding. A flaky key can allow a crank/no start situation. Do rpms go up...
