BMW calls it the DM-TL system. This document covers it in detail, although for an X5 it's the same system....

Get a real battery charger and just use the trickle charger for when you don't drive it.

It's worth testing the evap purge valve to see if it's working correctly or not. Check resistance at the terminals, use a vacuum pump to check for leakage, etc.
