Had a similar issue. Took me about 600 miles to do. Not sure if it had anything to do with it but when I had kept the sport button off and drove 55mph, that's when the sensor finally became "ready".

Dropped the knuckle, the Bilsteins went right in. Took about 30 mins a side when strut is fully assembled.
Not sure why these have such a long strut inner shaft but once the car was lowered back...
