Pop the hood and look at the top of the strut tower. If it's anything but flat across the top and especially if the strut mount bolts are splayed out, consider it mushroomed.

I've owned my E46 for 4+ years and almost 50K miles and the remote functions on the keys have NEVER worked, but they always lock and unlock the doors via the lock on the handle.

Yes that's the blower resistor.

The heater control valve is easy to replace and not expensive, but I'd make sure your outside temp sensor is working correctly first.
