I didn't do this vent hole thing and have no leak whatsoever after smooth out the cap "ridge". I absolutely don't think the vent hole is the leaking source.

Add to this: pull hand brake, then turn the main drive shaft at the tranny output to find how much the backlash from tranny to diff. If more than 90* then it's too much.
