2005 3 series radio head unit into a 2001 330ci

Hi I'm trying to upgrade the radio head unit on my 2001 bmw 330ci to the most recent one. My questions are is it possible? Would an older year head unit be easier to install? Would there be any problems??
Also what I want out of my radio head unit:
Radio/ Cd Player
Auxiliary option***
I really want to use my ipod with my radio and also what are the features that are different on the 2005 head units compared to the rest
Thanks!

Any E46 radio unit will fit into any E46. no matter if its tape, cd buss or pro , or nav or whatever. All are plug and play .

CD player from '05 will let you do aux, ipod integration and it also plays mp3 cds

Actually I believe the units before 09/02 have different antenna connections. A retrofit is possible however it will be more difficult than you are describing.

I have an 05 business unit in my 08/2002 manufactured E46.

If thats the case then its not a big deal. That antenna is only for radio reception , and why would you listen to the radio once you have MP3 player . If the weather is so important to some people , they can look it up on their phone nowadays . Noone really needs the radio anymore, plus they never play the songs you like

Yes, the antenna connection is different AND depending on your FZV amplifier you will loose keyless entry which will require upgrading to a newer FZV antenna amplifier or some rewiring.

Edit: I just replaced the in dash CD player in my 1999 to a MP3 capable in dash CD player from a 2004-5 and when I did I lost my key less entry, but, that was because I don't have my FZV antenna amplifier bolted down because I use my car to test FZVs that I get in for repair. The screws that hold the FZV provide a return path for power (aka ground). If I had installed the AM/FM adapter cable it might not have been a problem.

Is upgrading the antenna amp expensive? I would really like to keep the radio as well because at some point i get sick of my own music and just want to listen to some hard jazz

I had spoke with BSW when they offered selling the facelift radios for the older cars and they told me it was a direct swap.... I never did do it though

I own a 07/98 production 328 that originally came with a tape deck. I have upgraded to a 2001 production year cd player and then to a late 02 production with MODE button for aux and sirius capability. I did nothing other than straight swap every time, all plugs were the same. FM reception doesn't seem to be affected but I don't really listen to it anyways, and keyless was not affected either. So this is kind of hit and miss for problems, I would give the upgrade a shot, then if you have issues address them then.

I installed a 05 into 2000 323ci. I had to get a newer bmw antena adapter male and female (which i actually have extra for sale $15). This will allow you to get decent reception.
And on top of that you should replace the antena amplifier.. Hard to find. I got mine on ebay for $30. In a ci its in behind the left rear pillar light.
This will give you best reception.

I would be interested in your male and female adapters. How much were they originally? And how is your radio and be ahead unit treating you? As far as your new unit was there an aux included? Or did you have to install an aux add on?

Cost Depends on the deal you find for a newer HU...
I got mine for $120 shipped + $30 for amp and about $20 for adaptrs... Sold my old HU for $100 localy :-)

Also AUX in US is about $45. Simple plug into the rear and no issues. I loved it.. I used my phone to listen to international radio stations normally through sound system and even used it as a speaker phone if someone called me (hands free) ;-)

I just ordered a AUX for my new Ci

There was someone selling their 04 HU for $50.. I almost bought it just to have one apair..

Search for a thread about installing newer HU. Its here somewhere

Also if it's a 2001 e46 radio can you add an auxiliary input?

AUX capability began in late 2002... Stick with 02+ years..
And 05 had some problems with software so make sure its not one of the refurbished ones that received a new part#..
I had an 05 and no issues at all so its all hit and miss with 05
