Recommended Oil/Oil Filter for e46?

Does everyone use OEM or is another preferred?

a lot of people use Mobil 1 oil. And make sure you use OEM filter. You can get them for a discounted price from pacific BMW.

I went with Castrol Syntec

The new "advanced" or whatever high tech slang they use for it now. I used to use Mobil 1 Syn everytime for the last 8 changes or so, but this is my first time with Castrol. Honestly, I think I like it better. It seems to have quieted the engine ticking and noises down slightly and revs nicely.

Some people use, Mobil, Castrol, Amsoil, maybe Redline too, any one of these will work fine for you.

M's are supposed to use a special oil, I can't remember exactly what it is, or if people even heed the warning, but I thought it was a little different than regular 3's oil. (Maybe 0-30 or something)

And yeah, grab a BMW filter. might be 8 bucks or something for ANY dealer.

i have heard good things about amsoil 0w-30 series 2000, but it costs like $8 per quart. i would just get mobil 1 0w-30 or 0w-40 and it costs around $5 per quart. factory oil filter will do the job, or you can use mobil 1 oil filter for $12.

I use OEM oil and filters. It's not too bad with the BMWCCA discount.

Smile Castrol SLX

My local BMW dealer recommends using Castrol SLX (0W-30W) and OEM Oil Filter. He also set the inspection interval for 25000kms,but in fact I can run 4 abt 15,000-16,000kms before the warning light pop up.

This set up is used for 318i, 323i and 330i in Thailand.

I run Mobil 1 15w50 with the OEM filter every 3000 or less.

Peter, do you have anymore pics of your car? That color looks HOT!

Yup use OEM filters, I used Amsoil 2000 0w30 last time around.
Should be good for 7000 or 8000 miles...

Thumbs Up Thanks!

Thanks for answering my question guys. Ended up getting Mobil 1 0w-40 and the OEM filter. Oil was $35 for 7 quarts, filter was $13 from the dealer, and change was $20 from a independent BMW service station. It's cheaper then what the dealer would charge so I feel like I made out pretty well at $68.

Ya, I could have done it myself but I don't have a car ramp and then I'd have to pay for disposal anyway.

I bought an oil extractor so I can do it myself in between that factory 15k mile. I'll change mine every 5k and let the dealer do it every 15k miles. I'm going to get 0 w40 and I ordered 6 OEM filters from circle bmw. I have a place to dispose of the oil near my house so no biggie. I think it is like $3 dollar oil disposal fee.
