Programming my e46's key
I followed up the steps below to program the key, managed somehow to program but now it only locks the doors!
1. Got in and closed all the doors. 2. Put the key in the ignition and switched momentarally to position 1 (left in this position not more than 5 seconds) then turned the key back to the off position. 3. Removed the key. 4. On the key transmitter, pressed and holded unlock button. Pressed and released lock button three times within 10 seconds while still having pressed the unlocked button. 5. Released the unlocked button It worked! So now it only locks the doors! Where may be the issue? Am I doing anything wrong? How do I manage to unlock the doors with the remote? Thanks in advance |

Can anybody put some light on this?
Update: went to the key specialist, he is asking 80 euros to make unlock button functional! Last edited by bmwe46s; 08-20-2010 at 01:57 AM. |

There is a couple different key intializing procedures, and it just depends on your car which one will work. Not sure if that's your problem here, or if you have some issues with your electronics?? But check this video out here, once you get through the battery replacement stuff, it lists the procedures for intializing.
Good luck. |

possibly a problem with the gm? Or maybe you messed up something in the unlock part of the key when it was apart?

Please don't follow the instructions in that youtube video and put a non rechargeable battery in your key fob. The battery he used is non-rechargeable and will be slowly damaged when the key is in the ignition when it's suppose to be charging. It won't cause the battery to explode, but, it will shorten it's life. The correct battery, Panasonic VL2020 is easy to obtain. Also if you have a key fob that just died all of a sudden, it's probably not the battery. These batteries do not fail that way. They fail slowly and as a low battery indicator the car will not respond to LOCKING commands from the key, but, will respond to unlock and trunk release just fine. Also the GM5 module will log a fault, which can be read out with the correct tool, when the low battery bit is received from the key something like 20 consecutive times (I forget the exact number of times it needs to occur, but, it's at least 10). The fault gets reset when the GM5 gets x number of battery OK messages from the key.
If you are having UNLOCKING problems then it's probably an actuator or GM5 problem. Last edited by scottjoh; 09-12-2011 at 03:53 PM. |
