Post Laser Shield License Plate legal?

Do you guys know if this is legal in Cali?

Inexpensive insurance against costly speeding tickets. To obtain an effective reading at long distances, a police laser gun needs a flat surface to bounce off. Your front license plate is the preferred target. Laser Shield absorbs and diffuses incoming laser beams, giving you more time to respond to laser detector alerts. It's thin enough to slip into most license plate frames, it won't yellow and it's shatterproof under normal conditions. Available for both US and Euro-style plates. Please specify. Note: This device is legal in most areas. Check local statutes before ordering. Buyer assumes all responsibility for using these lenses in compliance with local motor vehicle codes in their area of vehicle use.

I believe it's illegal. I think anything that obstructs your license plate is illegal.

You could run it, but I think if you were to get hit with laser, and the cop didn't get a reading...he may come after you and at least talk to you about the shield.

Not necessarily. and the reason its illegal is not because of something like this its because its an obstraction to your required plates. Im not a lawyer so i dont know the with exactitude but i think the law is you can have NOTHING obstracting your plates. In theory you cant even have a license plate frame. same way you cant have anything hanging in your rearview mirror. Sometimes it doesnt have to make sense to be a law.

I wouldn't go that far. I tried finding a CVC on the legality of this, but there's too many, and I'm too lazy.

Think about it, if it is a violation of the California Vehicle Code to have a license plate frame, why do dealers affix them onto cars sold? (And yes, they have to be in compliance with California law..after all, they do make you sign a waiver if you buy a car and request no front plate) How come departments like the California Highway Patrol and California State Sheriff's Association issue their own license plate frames for contributing members?

Yes, that "Laser Shield" is illegal because it is obstructing the view of your license plates to either the human eye, traffic camera, or laser. But surely a license plate frame shouldn't be a ticket-able offense. I'm sure somewhere in the CVC there are parameters that a license plate frame's size must fall into.

So what do they aim for if you don't have a front plate?

Send this one to Mythbusters

BTW...
California Vehicle Code 5201(2) states:

The installation of a license plate security cover is not a violation of this subdivision if the device does not obstruct or impair the recognition of the license plate information, including, but not limited to, the issuing state, license plate number, and registration tabs, and the cover is limited to the area directly over the top of the registration tabs. No portion of a license plate security cover shall rest over the license plate number.
A casing, shield, frame, border, product, or other device that obstructs or impairs the reading or recognition of a license plate by an electronic device operated by state or local law enforcement, an electronic device operated in connection with a toll road, high-occupancy toll lane, toll bridge, or other toll facility, or a remote emission sensing device, as specified in Sections 44081 and 44081.6 of the Health and Safety Code, shall not be installed on, or affixed to, a vehicle.

It's a technicality because the wording refers to the "reading" of a plate but says nothing about the use of the plate as a laser beam (or radar) reflector. I'm sure you could probably win this one in a court based on a technicality but you'd better know exactly what to say and how to say it or the judge is gonna kick your butt (metaphorically speaking)

EDIT: Oh ya... Also, if the plate returns no reading (or sketchy readings) they just revert to other parts of the car (like the side mirrors).
