just saw smoke coming out of my laptop's fan

WTF?

I have a fan on the left side and i just saw smoke coming out. The hole is covered with plastic bars. Looks like a prison cell kind of. I just noticed one of them is gone and one started to melt. WTF? Is my fan broken or what? laptop doesn't feel hot. feels normal.

Take it apart to see what's going on in there.

I'm guessin dust then, those vents can get jammed up with all kinds of dust bunnies. Most likely one of those got knocked loose. If the lappy is still running then I'm gonna say it's fine.

Yes, if you've had the laptop for some time, it was more than likely some dust that finally got dislodged. You're fine if you haven't received any BSOD and/or random shut off, since that's pretty much 100% likely to happen if your CPU fan died.

A functional heatsink is easily capable of melting a plastic case with prolonged contact. Being a laptop, it's not unlikely for the the heatsink to have been installed crooked and in contact with the case. It didn't just insta-melt, otherwise I'm sure whatever did that would have melted the PCB with it.

I remember my computer running hot. Took it apart and there was about 1/8" thick of dust totally covering the heatsink behind the vent. Scraped it off and temps dropped 15C
