Stripped Tensioner bolt

I am in the middle of an agonizing cooling system rebuild on my '00 323i (manual tranny) and as I was trying to remove the belt, the Torx Head bolt on the tensioner just rounded and now I can not get the belt off. I am kind of at a loss here. Not sure What I should do to proceed. I was planning on replacing the tensioner as well (i think i have the hydraulic tensioner and bavauto sent me the mechanical) so not the end of the world, I just now need to get the belt and tensioner off.

Any suggetions or ideas? Can I cut the belt, or is this a dynamic built up energy disaster waiting to take out my eye? Can I drill out the torx head? Thoughts?

Thanks in advance,

Matt

you aren't supposed to use the torx bolt to loosen the tensioner...there is a 16mm "bolt" built into the tensioner that you are supposed to use to loosen the tension

Can you see the bolt good? Mechanical tensioners had the spot for 16mm socket. If its hydraulic i have seen either a t50 bolt or like and 8mm hex. You can always pull really hard on the belt

I got the belt off by removing the idler pulley. Turns out not too much stored kinetic energy on the belt. And it turns out the DIY I used called for T50, however it was actually an 8mm hex. That is why it 'rounded'. The 8mm hex still works fine.

I do not, however, have the 16mm nut that I've seen some of you refer to. I've seen it in a picture somebody else posted, but my car does not have it. Is it maybe only on the 330i?

Thanks

Matt
