excellent DIY, paraklas. I plan on doing this in the spring as some preventative maintenance. I will no doubt be referring to this thread as a guide.

Quick question - thermostat
Paraklas: Awesome DYI!
I have a quick question...while removing the expansion tank I broke the thermostat plastic...I just ordered the part, however, it seems that there is still a piece of the old thermostat plastic where the expansion tank connects from the bottom...can you let me know how to remove it? thanks!!! |

Here are the pics....
The red rectangle on picture one (pretty faint) shows where the piece (in picture two) broke off. Picture 2 shows what seems to be a thermostat and a spring...your help is very appreciated...

Gents,
Attached a picture on how the thermostat used to go. I was able to place it back but it does not feel real secure (it will surely come off with regular driving). So, given that the part is broken (both the plastic on the thermostat and on the mounting plate - I believe that is the plastic part that holds the thermostat and also the expansion tank, # 1 on the following diagram: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...41&hg=17&fg=05 - do I have to also replace the mounting plate? That seems like a JOB....and will probably require for me to take the radiator completely out...any of you done this? thanks for your help! |

Great write up Paraklas!
I start first thing tomorrow morning. Stewart water pump, new UUC under pulleys & belt, thermostat, belt tensioner and new hoses. Should be quite a day.

![]() ![]() Thermostat housing is leaking now. Anybody knows if it's repairable using gasket silicone (like the one used for valve cover gasket) or do I need to change the entire unit.

![]() BTW - Great DIY Paraklas! I followed it almost point for point except the fact I have an automatic and besides installing the Stewart water pump, thermostat, expansion tank, belt tensioner, new hoses and belts I was also installing a new under pulley system. Couldn't have done it without your great write up. Thanks....
