"Pre-wired for alarm" What does that mean exactly?

So, I have these plastic buttons in my trunk, and Im trying to figure out the alarm one:

Does that mean I have the alarm and all I need to do is activate it? Sorry if this is a stupid question, but the dealer said I need to buy the whole alarm and it would cost like $700!!!!

I'm pretty sure that pre-wiring just means that all the necessary wirings required for the system is already set up.

Let's say you wanna install a CD changer or Alarm, all you need to do is the buy the parts and connect to the wires that were already there when the car was built.

It means all you have to is buy the alarm from tischer for $235 or whatever it is and install the sensors and siren yourself, a very easy install since all the wiring is already done. There's a couple DIY's on here or out there, google it. You may still need the dealership to activate the new alarm after you install it (don't remember) but that should only be $50-$100 depending on the stealership.

It means exactly what it says... it's pre-wired for an alarm. Meaning all you would have to do is buy the alarm and essentially plug it in (*yes, not quite that simple but you get the idea) and get the alarm turned on at the dealer.

All the wires are run and ready for use.

The dealer is full of it. The full alarm kit is $235 from Tischer and it's a simple install. Is your clown nose blinking? If yes, it is already activated for you, and you're good to go after the installation..

3. Siren: Under 30 minutes.

I really don't think so... For the motion sensor, you just pop up the center sensor housing down and plug it in. The tilt sensor includes loosing a bolt and tightening two, that's why it's under 4 minutes.. I really don't think it'll take you more than an hour to install the siren. Here's a nice DIY:

I searched, but just couldnt find what I was looking for, thanks for the help...where does the tilt sensor go? Does the new alarm that you buy come with a remote key? new alarm key, or does it work through the stock key?

In the trunk, on the right hand side. Just read the DIY I linked, everything you'll need is there! Your stock key will work with the alarm..

Not totally true. My car came pre-wired for the alarm, and my clown nose has always blinked from day one. I installed the alarm, and I still have to get it activated. I get the beep at door lock/unlock, but the motion sensor, and trunk tilt sensor still need to be activated.

could be, I'm going with the info in the DIY I linked above (duplicated below).. I've installed the tilt and the motion sensors myself and siren will be in within a week. Regardless, people still under factory warranty/maintenance plan can have it activated fully at no cost at the next scheduled service...

Apparently, if your clown nose blinks already, your alarm will be activated once you install it. I went to my local BMW dealership and had a technician friend of mine check the system. Everything is already activated. The chirp during arm and disarm is quiet and won't wake up your neighbors, but when set off, this thing screams pretty good. I think it is a worthwhile investment and am glad to hear it is finally standard equipment.
