4.4 V8 conversion

Building a show car for the summer and i have been rattling my brain with what to do.

everybody has a M3 so i decided not to base it on that, everybody has a 330ci with a supercharger so thats out the window also.

but what about a M62 4.4 V8 from the E38/E39 installed in the E46 coupe?

I have found a perfect engine and a good car to base it on (318ci), now what other parts will i need in order for this to be a turn key car?.
when i say turn key i mean it has to be fully functioning like a standard E46, all electronics and aircon working etc.

also i have goggled myself senseless and i cant find anyone who has done this on a E46, some guys have on a E30.

any help will be appreciated!

It would be pretty sick, but it'll probably under-steer like a champ. But, if it's a show car, I don't guess that matters.

Interesting idea but isn't that pretty similar to the idea behind the Hartge?

yes it is but they used a expensive M5 engine and charged stupid money for it!.

i was considering boring it out to 4.6 or installing a stroked crank, but then again nigh on 300bhp with 320ft-lb is enough anyway i think.

and when you say understeer, your refering to maybe the increased weight of the V8?
i have been told its lighter than the M3 engine, so it shouldnt be a problem.

That would be totally badass. Somebody (Hartge?) swapped the 5.0 V8 from an E39 M5 into an E46 M3 a few years ago and I think offered them for sale for some rediculous amount, like over $100k.

I'd bet swapping the 4.4 into a coupe wouldn't be nearly that bad, but I'd guess at least $10k to do it.

Understeer would be apparent off throttle, yes.
However, I have a feeling that once you get on the throttle, it's oversteer you'll be worrying about.

The M62 is actually an Aluminum Block weighing 427lbs.

The S54 is actually an Iron Block...I'm sure the weight can be found on this website, but a google search turned up nothing.

so its basically in LS1 territory... if anyone thinks it'll understeer, refer to this post.

I might be wrong on this, but don't the v8 e39's use a recirculating ball steering box?

That might be an issue swapping it into an e46.

You are correct...E39 and E38 both use RB Steering System due to lack of clearance.

I would imagine in an e46 you would have to adapt that into the engine bay as well, but it looks to have been done before:

ok so i have a few questions that i need to confirm.

1) what coupe should i use and does it matter, im planning on using a 2000 318ci as its clean and cheap.
2) which M62 should i use, i know there are 3 versions, 4.0 from e34, 4.4 with no vanos (i think), 4.4 with double vanos.
3) do i take the electronics from the E39/E38 car or modify the existing electronics from the E46.

thanks

possible donor car
