P1411 (M56 eng) Secondary Air Pump No Activity Detected. Sounds like your secondary air injection pump. There's a fuse check that first. There's a relay behind the glove box. The Secondary Air Injection Pump is the round canister device to the back right of your windshield wiper fluid reservoir. The Secondary Air Injection Pump valve sits in front of the pump (has hose from pump to valve).

I got a check engine light at about 58k miles and the Peake code told me it was the secondary air system. I replaced the pump and valve described above and it fixed the problem. Bav Auto told me this is a common failure on the e46. The parts were approx $375, so you may want to just try replacing the valve first before you spring for the pump. I also learned that the small tubing (somewhare around 5-6mm) that connects to the valve gets brittle and cracks when you disturb it, so either have some handy when you start the project, or know where you can get some quick. Needless to say, it was almost impossible to find the tubing in Memphis, TN - cus only them dang for'n cars use metrics.
I think I also had to get a gasket or 2 for the pump and valve. This is a very easy diy. |

I beleive this all is connect to the fuel injection system so... One thing you may try, sometime back I had was trying to detect where a noise was coming from and recall listening to the seconday air pump (mechanics stethoscope). If you hear a unique sound (compared to surrounding sounds) then I would say it is working, culprit valve? . If no sound then?? Fuse, relay, pump.

where is the fuse for this? I wanted to check it first before jumping to others. Does the pump on all the time when engine running? There is another black device (sits next to the pump, size of the apple) hooked up to the pump, what is that?
Thanks, |
