I'd check the cable to the air pump...and then check the o2 sensors...I hope that's right...=)

A failing/failed secondary air pump is a common BMW problem. I doubt it's any kind of sensor.

check the rubber hoses from the pump for cracking or holes....they sometimes wear with the 'dry heat' from the engine....it prob is the pump itself, but id rather take 2 minutes to check the hoses just in case as they are a hell of a lot cheaper..

i look at the hose it seems ok, i'll double check it tho..
if the air pump fail how do i verify that? I just don't want to buy parts that will not fix the problem..
Anyone know if the emission controller unit has a longer warranty than normal? b/c i'm already at 58k miles.
thanks for your help.. damn bmw is a headache...first i worry about my step failing when it hits 100k now something else. money money money.. bmw = breaks my wallet...

I'm pretty sure the secondary air pump is an emissions device. It might still be covered.

ya..... don't you hate it when you take it to the dealer and go, "my powersteering is ouT" and they say okay we'll take care of it!

Come back later and they haven't done a single thing and wont cover it since aftermarket parts mumbo jumbo
and tell you to pay 160 inspection since some1 inspected it and found out the powersteering is out.

The air pump is an emissions device but only 3 major emissions devices are covered under the federally mandated 8 year, 80k mile emissions warranty - catalytic converters, the ECU, and the OBD system. All other components are covered under the regular 4 year 50k mile warranty.

you can check to see if the pump still works...im not sure of the proper procedure..but its something like..you take the rubber hose off before u start your engine then start the engine..(the pump should come on for a minute or so then) you put your hand over the hole where u took the hose from and see if you can feel pressure building up....its something like that..i saw it on here, try doing a search for it though..

Actually, you have MS45 and that means you have a tiny MAF on your secondary air system. You can see it on the tube right after the filter. Check that first.

THe ONLY things covered by the 8 year warranty are the catalytic converters, ECU, and OBD2 diagnostic system.

The 2ndary Air pump is part of emissions control and will be covered under emission warranty. Go to the dealer, it should be covered.
