I have a 2000 323i with the 20 pin connector. I don't have the service lights, I have a numerical "miles countdown" for the indicator. I have tried resetting it with the jumper in first, then turning the key and by turning the key and then inserting the jumper with no luck. The connector is numbered so I know I am using connections 7 and 19.
I have read and made many attempts to reset the oil service light per the directions given on BMW DIY website. Has anyone else ever had a problem with the oil service indicator NOT reseting?

I have a 2000 323i and I am able to reset the oil service light by using the left knob on the dash. With the car off, hold down the left knob until it starts to flash, while holding the knob turn the key to position 1, keep holding the knob.

Play with it a few times, it took me a couple of times to get it just right. Look on the forum, there is a link that tells you exactly what and how to do it.

if that's the case then try this:

RESETTING OIL SERVICE INDICATOR:
If your OBC needs to be reset after completing your oil change, there are two ways. NOTE: If you miss a step, just turn the key back off and try again:

A. Model Year 1999 to Mid-2000: You should have the older round 20-pin DLC connector under your hood behind the battery terminal, you need to use a small length of wire to connect (short) pins 7 and 19 for 3-5 seconds with the ignition key in position 1 (Accessory).

B. After Mid-2000: You should not have the 20-pin DLC connector. You only need to hold the left odometer reset button while turning the key to position 1 (Accessory). Keep holding the button for 5 or so seconds until any of the following shows in the display: OIL SERVICE or INSPECTION with RESET or RE. Release the button and press it again for another 5 or so seconds until RESET or RE flash. While the display flashes, press the button one more time briefly. If done correctly, END SIA should show up for a few seconds. All done.

I have a 2000 323i and i am having the same problem. I have read 100s of threads about connecting pins 7 and 19, i cant count the number of times i've tried and yet still nothing. So i have no idea but i dont want to spend $100 just to reset my damn oil counter, how stupid is that. If there is someone out there that knows how to do it let me know. By the way my car was built in April of 2000 so the knob thing doesnt work.

This is a good visual diagram for the pin method http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=145270&highlight=reset

The trick is in the timing. It's not about 3-5 seconds, it's exactly 5 seconds, which is what makes it often confounding to do. Too little time and it won't work, too much...ditto. Be patient and keep trying you'll get it. Also, pin 19 is really just the ground, and often the aluminum inside might have a slight tarnish which may inhibit a good contact. A solution I've found worked for me was to ground to the [-] battery terminal which is right there.

oil service reset

It's been a couple years since the last post here, so while it's probably working for most, I just went through it myself. The odometer button routine didn't work for me, I kept getting the test message. Jumping pin 7 to 19 didn't work. But jumping pin 7 to a bolt on the car and counting three seconds worked perfectly. Thanks for the help! This was on a 2000 328i.

did you connect the pin 7 to a (-) bolt first ? and then turned the key to position 1? or the other way around?
