hi,

can somebody exlpian what this exactly means and what it does:
"To reset the indicator:
-The car should be off
-hold down the left instrument button (the trip odometer reset)
-while holding the key, turn the ignition to position 1 (radio)
-you will see a test menu
-keep holding the button
-after maybe 10 seconds, the word "reset" will appear
-let go of the button and press again
-THe indicator is reset!"
got 105k on my 3301 sedan the service thing started at 20000 now it's down to 18000. what gives?

My process differs slightly, and it works fine on my '01 325i (for oil change intervals...haven't tried it for inspections).

- Press and hold trip meter button down and turn ignitiion key to accesory position.
- Hold until you see 'reset'.
- Release and immediately press and hold again for 5 seconds, until 'reset' flashes.
- Release and press again.

I think the last step may be where you're going wrong

Does this process also work with the 2000 328Ci? I have been looking at some DIY and was wondering what actually works? I am kind of new to BMW and want to make sure i don't screw up anything.

By the way, no means of hijacking your post.

I found this information: http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=145270&highlight=oil+reset

Is this the correct way to go? I just want to make sure this is adequate as i would hate to fry electrical components trying to save a few dollars.

Thanks,

hey i have the same problem now i did the same process the other day and the service engine light is still on and so is my oil light but that turns off a couple seconds but my service light still stays on so maybe i may need a service because i have 76xxx miles and it may be just coincidence derno.

I just tried this on my 330ci and it worked. Now its raised a new question.
...The car needed an oil service according to the dash. So i had that done, without reseting the counter. Ive just done it and at that point it was minus 3000 i think. Now it has been reset and straight away the word inspection is visble. Does that mean Inspection NOW or Inspection when the counter reaches 0?

I went through this step by step and was able to reset the oil service but only to "Inspection". When I went throught the procedure again all I get is "END SIA" and it stays in the INSPECTION mode not OIL SERVICE. Can anyone help to switch this over to OIL SERVICE? Another question I have is concerning all the other codes that pop up when repeatedly pressing the trip odometer button? Can these codes be changes and what are they for?

Thanks,

Hey, what gives. I changed the Oil in my car last weekend and I have tried the procedure suggested here a bazillion times, no luck.
I don't think it'd be different for an M3 (2003).
It eventually blinks on End and that's it, no Reset has happened.

Help please, negative numbers in the Oil Change Indicator bother me :)

Thanks

tried all of this and problem

so i have an 03 m3, just did service 2 and tried what was listed in this thread...it doesnt work, maybe someone can help me

when i hold in left stick and turn key it says test on left side and a number on the right side, so i release the stick and push in again, after few seconds, goes back to mileage and trip mileage, then when i push again it goes back to test and number on the right side...

This worked for me

I was able to reset my '02 330 XI with the following steps:

1) Push trip meter button (on left side of cluster), and hold.
2) Turn key to accessory position
3) Wait for display to show either oil change or inspection, with mileage
4) Release tip button and press again. Hold until display reads END.

I had to do it a few times, probably because I didn't waited enough time in step 3.
