From what the manual says, it should recharge as it is being used in the ignition hole. "Use this key
while driving for an extended period in
order to recharge the battery." Page 29 in my manual (325i 2002)
Although it is a rechargeable battery, it will eventually wear out. If you constantly ue the key and it has had an opportunity to charge, then you do need to replace the battery. The remote is not designed to make this process easy though. Need to cut the key open and do a little soldering. There is a diy out there.
