Secondary air pump noise

Anyone else have the secondary air pump making a screeching noise? Here's the part number: 11 72 1 435 364. It's the canister type thing on the passenger side of the engine compartment.

It makes the noise for a minute or so at start up then stops.

Anyone know if there's anything complicated about replacing it. Just unbolt or do you have to pull a vacuum on any lines or anything like that??

Is it screeching loud, like really loud, sounds like something broken? Some do produce a slight whine, which is fairly normal, kinda like a jet engine sound from inside the cab. Pretty sure this is just the pump working to push air. Check the hose that runs from it to the check valve for cracks or damage. Also if you have an early e46, prior to 03/04 w/ an m54 motor, take the top cover off it, it unclips. Check the little foam filter in their to make sure it's in tact. It's simple to replace. I have a used pump for sale with about 50k miles on it if you're interested.

No, it's not screeching very loudly. Just a noticeable whining.

I've got a '99 328i with the m52 engine but the same type of component. I opened it up and the filter is disintegrating but the hose to the valve is what is in worse shape so I'll replace those and maybe that will resolve the whining problem.

But, I hate to order that simple hose (11727555680) online for $15 especially since that doesn't include shipping.

Can I just get general use automotive hose from my local auto parts dealer?

No, I work at a auto parts store, we don't have anything with the pre-molded bends that you need. Call a local dealership and get a price, it really can't be that expensive from them. And you'll save on shipping. You should definitely replace that hose those, it's very common for them to disintegrate with age, if you don't eventually you'll get a check engine light.

Yup, mine disintegrated. Wtf does this secondary air pump thing do? I think I remember reading it was some emissions-related deal, but what exactly is it pumping and to where and why? And whats the primary airpump?

The check valve is vacuum operated to open at cold starts, with the check valve open, the air pump feeds air through ports in the head and into the exhaust manifolds. This fresh air helps to warm up the cats faster and improve their ability to filter emissions on cold starts.

AGB, Damn! $40 for a short pre-molded hose is a damn ripoff, I can't believe that.

As I may have mentioned earlier, I have gotten Peake Table 15 codes 92 and 8. I've also got a whining, coming from the air pump for the first couple minutes of a cold start.
I noticed that my air pump smog hose was quite brittle so I ordered and just received it today. So, I'm replacing tonight and let you all know if it resolved the problems or not.
My hose was only $14.59 and since I ordered a few other items, shipping was free. Got it from AutohausAZ.

The dealer wanted 40 plus tax. That's why I got it online. Was 17 bucks plus 6 bucks shipping plus good old California sales tax. I would have gotten it from Autohaus AZ but it would have taken a day longer to get it. So I bit the bullet and got the one close by.

so, where's this website you guys get it for $24 shipped from?

im having a CEL for primary & secondary air pump, along with the intake cam sensor.

sensor should be here on wed

and have been wondering about the air pump.

the first year or so i had this E46, i never heard it much..

('99 323i)

after some time, i heard the whinning of the air pump much louder than before..

i'll remove the engine cover to see if i can find this hose from the air pump & filter tomorrow..

Just wanted to report back here to say that I got the new hose, installed it and the screeching from the air pump has stopped. The nozzle from the aluminum air pump check valve was covered with crusty, grey, sooty junk which I had to scrape off before attaching the new hose. No noise and no more code (I believe it was P1478) so all good.

Note to previous poster: you don't have to remove anything to see this hose (at least the one I'm referring to p/n 11727555680). The one I replaced is the air pump smog hose and it's plainly visible between the air pump (11721435364) and the smog pump check valve/emission system control valve (11727553063).

The place I got the part from is AutoHausAZ.com. $14.59 + shipping. They have a $50 threshold for free shipping and I ended up buying some other stuff so $0 shipping.

I hate to wake this one up... but my passenger side makes wierd noises but not only at start up but constantly, as long as i have the scroll thing turned to cold. Theres a whistle kind of too it. During the real real hot days, the right side refuses to blow out any cold A/C while the left side does. But when it gets cooler outside the passenger side begins to partially send out cold air. I'll make a vid of this ASAP. I'm new to this site, arent I suppose to get an email informing me that someone commented on the thread? thanks

hey guys my 2000 328ci M52TU is making this god awful noise like rattle and i know the vanos has to be repaired but this is a different noise it sounds like a go-cart from inside the engine its on the passenger side. It really sounds like its coming from the secondary air pump. It makes the noise when i rev the car in nuetral and under load never at stand still. Idk if its the vanos projecting the sound because as we know the air pump is right next to the vanos. OR is it my tensioner pulleys? i have no idea ive been reading and reading but i cant seem to find somone having this problem or atleast describing it like a go-cart. Thanks
